Proving Photo Authenticity
How RViG Proves Passport Photo Authenticity with Layered Verification

Challenge
Digital passport photos introduce new attack vectors that traditional verification cannot detect.
Solution
An invisible watermark is embedded in the photo pixels at the moment of capture. Any manipulation breaks the watermark, making tampering instantly detectable.
Impact
- 5Verification layers
- 0-100Trust score per photo
- <1sVerification time
The Deepfake Identity Crisis
Digital passport photos introduce new attack vectors that traditional verification cannot detect.
- Deepfake identity documents becoming increasingly sophisticated
- Morphing attacks blending multiple faces into one passport photo
- Synthetic identities slipping through manual verification processes
- No cryptographic proof of when, where, or by whom a photo was taken
The Vision
“Create a verification system where every digital passport photo carries irrefutable proof of authenticity. From the moment of capture to final verification, each photo is cryptographically linked to its origin, making deepfakes detectable and synthetic identities impossible.”
5-Layer Verification System
Digital Watermark
An invisible watermark is embedded in the photo pixels at the moment of capture. Any manipulation breaks the watermark, making tampering instantly detectable.
Content Authenticity Manifest
A C2PA manifest (the global content authenticity standard used by Adobe, Microsoft, and the BBC) is attached to every photo, providing an independently verifiable proof of origin.
Photographer Credentials
Verified photographer identity ensures only certified professionals can produce valid passport photos. Each credential is cryptographically signed and revocable.
Tamperproof Record
An immutable record proves exactly when, where, and with what device the photo was captured. No tampering possible after the fact.
Device Attestation
The camera or device used to capture the photo is verified and authenticated, closing the final gap in the chain of trust from hardware to document.
Restoring Trust in Digital Identity
“When a passport photo can be generated by AI, the question shifts from 'does this person look right?' to 'can we prove this photo is real?' That is the question RViG asked us to solve.”

Beyond Passport Photos
The verification framework is designed to extend beyond passport photos. The same 5-layer architecture can authenticate any official document, from diplomas to notarial deeds. As the EU Digital Identity Wallet rolls out, proof of document authenticity becomes essential infrastructure for trusted digital government.
